To all of you Generation Z Type A’s out there:
Don’t be in such a hurry to get a jump-start on your career! Just Stop! Stop it right now.
Enjoy your youth…enjoy it now because what you don’t know is…you only have one chance to savor the absolute best part of your life. And it will go by in a nanosecond.
Don’t spend being young on worrying about how you will be the next president, the next doctor, the next executive or the next… well, the next anything! There’s plenty of time for that kind of dedication…that kind of work…those kind of hours every single day.
Use this little sliver of time in your life when you’re young to have fun with your friends, to go crazy, to experience something new every single second of every single day. You won’t be able to experience anything like it later in life. You just won’t.
Something new? Like what?
Like snowboarding, skateboarding, skydiving, road trips, river rafting, backpacking, bungee jumping, one-time experiences, 3-Day concerts, couch surfing, cow tipping, beer ponging, water skiing, snowmobiling or just hanging out…playing your favorite video games. Basically, anything that later in life you can look back and say: “I’m really glad I did those things when I could.”
Why is this so important? Let me tell you why - whether you are a girl or a guy.
Because soon…probably in your late twenties…you will get an important job, you will fall in love, you will get married…have kids…make a little money…buy a home…and concentrate 24/7 on just paying your bills.
Your thirties? They will be a blur in the burbs. Nuff said. Your forties will mean more weight and another chin. Then in your fifties, everything will irritate you and you will irritate everyone who will listen to you about what irritates you. In your sixties, you will pull your pants up to your chest or wear a pantsuit like Hillary Clinton and constantly put your hand behind your ear so you can hear what people are saying.
Your seventies? You are finally retired and you always say to yourself: “Now I can do ANYTHING that I damn well please.”
But as you walk slowly down your sidewalk, some kids fly by you on a flying hoverboard – not one of the fire starting ones with wheels like today – one that really flies right past and you can’t help but think to yourself“I guess I can’t do anything that I damn well please.”
So…stop working on your future. Stop. And…while you are young…just enjoy exploring, enjoy the world, enjoy yourself when you are young!
